Statement of Intent (Personal Research Project – Photography)

What is the premise of your idea?

The concept is aimed how when oneself is depressed and lost in the world, we lose our sense of place and time. I want my work to be very poetic and melancholy.

Why does this idea matter to you? Personal connection to your subject.

I want to approach my work in a present way, expressing emotions of distort and losing oneself, losing sense of time and existence.

Where does your project sit in wider frame of reference?

The piece will be set in modern times

Which influences are you drawing on in your work?

Photographers Veronika Tumova and Balazs Sprenc: I had come across this photographer, whose style of work looks very expressive and relatable to my vision. I wanted to take this approach on intentionally shooting my subjects and it’s scenery out of focus and on slow shutter speed, creating almost a ghost figure in a lost world.

Atrium Carceri: I have been listening to dark ambient artist Atrium Carceri, to help bring ideas on my writing.

Anders Fridén: Swedish singer/songwriter, I have been reading his lyrics, taking inspiration for when I write my short poems. One song by the title. ‘The Chosen Pessimist’.

Which new skill do you need to learn to successfully complete this body of work?

I will be using 35mm film camera as I feel the film grain makes the image more organic, so I will need to understand how to properly read a light meter during shoot, how to process film in darkroom and using appropriate chemicals to create the color effect that I desire; I will also need to learn how to scan my prints digital, in case of editing my photos through Photoshop.

Time frame: When will you do what? How will you complete this project in the given time frame?

  • 26th, I will be doing test shoots on my film camera
  • 4th April, I will have an induction on developing 35mm colour film in darkroom, just to get familiarized and comfortable on how the process work.
  • 10th April, I will be doing one of my shoots with chosen subject
  • 15th April, by this time I shall have all the film that is required and shall be spending all my time, developing all the film stocks.
  • 16th April, I will digitally scan them, allowing me to use photoshop

Renascence 10min short film

Synopsis:

9 months has past since young stage actress, Patrica lost her boyfriend from a car accident. Patrica is now slowly recovering and showing improvement, seeking help from a psychiatrist and guidance from religion in order to have a sense of faith and hope. Patrica reads a screen play from which she then becomes fascinated by the lead character, she starts to discover that she has a strong connection and strong sympathetic feelings with this woman, Patrica feels that this is a role that is worth fighting for and that it will help lift her spirit up and give her a direction/purpose to her life.

Messages and values:

It’s a story about the Resurrection of a broken spirit, it shows us that the trials of suffering can challenge us to discover ourselves and push us forward, it explores self worth, how when life’s accidental tragedy breaks us apart, and we lose valuable things around us that make us happy, there is always something inside of us that will give us a purpose in our life to keep us moving forward.

Narrative:

Originally I wanted the script to show the set up, we see the event of her losing her boyfriend and then we see the grieving process, but due to limited screen time, I cut that out as I realized that the point of the story that I wanted to focus on was a woman who finds an inner purpose that ascends her from suffering.

BBFC Age certificate

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification.) is designed for age ratings for TV/Film.

This blog will explain each age ratings and what is entitled before it breaches to the upper age certificate.

U/universal ratings: This age certificate is designed for everybody, for children, teen and adults. Being universal, there is zero tolerance to high violence, drugs and mature language, etc. However depending on how the violence is portrayed on screen, the piece must be very tamed so that it will not offend children and parents.

PG/Parental guidance: This age certificate is for general viewing, however some scenes may offend children, so parental guidance is provided for a child to see this movie.

12A rating: When the age certificate reaches to 12, moderate violence, sex references and language is acceptable depending on the themes of violence and how the language is used. When spider-man was released in 2002, many children were craving to watch it in the cinema, however because it was rated 12, many of the public were disappointed. This made BBFC decide to invent a new age rating called 12a, acceptable for people under 12 only if they have parental guidance. References of drugs and suicide is acceptable but not in detail,  where young people will be able to copy from it.

15 age ratings: 15 rated films/TV can show scenes of strong sex references, strong verbal references to sex, strong violence, strong language, hard use of drugs. Strong violence is acceptable, but strong gore or sadistic violence will draw the line.

18 age rating: An 18 rated TV/Film will include pretty much anything, from hard drug use  detailed strong sex scenes (Real), to sadist violence, strong gore, strong language such as F**K and extreme strong language such as C**T is acceptable. However if the whole piece has been shown to encourage or misuse of drugs, it is zero tolerance.

R 18: You can only watch restricted 18 if the cinema is licensed for it, also may find them in licensed shops. This is because the material is to disturbing or offensive to the general public.
