Representation

With the twist at the ending of the music video, we discover that Corey Taylor (Lead singer) is in the hotel and he is dressed up how his ex girlfriend would dress. Wearing stockings, bra and lipstick. The idea is unique and very moving to audiences who can relate to this character, not physically but mentally. It expresses the idea of a man who doesn’t want to let his ex go and in order to feel her presence, he must be like her.

Media language

Visual storytelling:

  • The video uses a lot of cut away, this was to not reveal the woman’s identity.
  • The interior lighting in the hotel rooms and corridors are quite low key, this was to achieve a dramatic look and create shadows that make it feel moody.

 

The music video uses a few low angle shots on Corey Taylor, this confuses me, as normally a low angle shot gives that feeling of strong and powerful, but the character in the video is very fragile.

Semiotics 

Human skull: In the hotel room, there is a human skull on the side, this to me could symbolize 3 things.

  1. Due to being a heavy metal band, there fond of skulls and death
  2. To symbolize the idea that the relationship between Corey and his wife is dead
  3. Maybe the reason she’s gone is not because she left him but because she passed away and the skull is a sign to say she died and Corey Taylor is grieving from her death

Deviant art is such a thoughtful and useful website, It’s targeted audiences is, well artists, but artists can benefit a lot from this site.

It is used to upload your artwork, not just one category but a wide range of art, from Paintings, Sketching, creative writings, Photography and even your own art videos.

I think artists can turn to this website then any other social media (Facebook, twitter) because everyone who uses this website and sees your work can be open minded and perceive it for what it is, as Facebook is more global and not as much will understand your work.

Deviant art allows artists to explore and communicate to artists around the world, they can leave feedback and follow artists.

By searching Deviant Art, you may get offers in the future, asking to buy paint brushes or art materials, possibly asking you to follow them on Facebook.

Why YouTube is so popular?

Same as Facebook, The range of audiences is so large, everyone can relate to it. Also I think more of the population, especially these days are drawn more to watching video then anything else

What purposes does YouTube have?

YouTube is used for everything not only moving image but pictures, texts and even music. It is used for educational purposes, (Tutorials, lessons and research,) entertainment, (Music and film.) also YouTube can be used as a vlog and watch things live.

Many celebrities today started by uploading their videos to YouTube.

Gabrielle Aplin who is now a famous british musician, sold herself by uploading her own songs and covers to her YouTube Channel.

Esmee Denters build her career by uploading low-tech karaoke videos

Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg Also known as Pewdiepie is now one of the most famous people on Youtube, just by sharing his gaming experiences and other vids. PewDiePie earned $7.4m 2014 due to his large amount of views and subscribers.

All these people have got where they are now due to turning to this website to sell themselves.

Like most websites, they use ads as a way of trying to persuade you to buy their products. Most of these ads are linked by your previous searches. If you like a game page on Facebook or watch videos of games on YouTube, YouTube will record this and advertise related videos. They do this by asking you to view or subscribe related videos.

Why Facebook is so popular?

To me I think the reason Facebook is so popular is not only because of how many layers it has. (Video streams, messenger call, ads, recommendations due to cookies.) but because it’s a social media and as human being, we are social creatures and are all drawn to it.

Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook designer) knew this website would become dependent on everybody, he knew his target audiences would be so big and most of the population would use it. Families use it to check up on each other, friends use it to plan and generally socialize on it and some people use it to search for their old lost friends.

What,When and where you use a device to search the web, everything is recorded and used for future purposes, with Facebook, they can see what you shop online and recommend an item for you, with friends that are added onto your account, Facebook knows this and uses it to help you find other friends that you may know, this is all called contextual Awareness.

Not only is Facebook used as a social media but it is also used as a way of supporting something, such as sharing a post to raise awareness of someone with cancer to help fund, it has become depended for employers, to use this website for support of their organization, it allows people to follow it and keep up to with it’s news.

 

Music Video Evaluation

 

18th December 2015-12-18

Since September 11th, we have started our music video rock/pop promo. This unit has been a journey of mistakes, exhaustion and lots of surprises, all for which has been a big learning curve.

We started our project by researching and analysing multiple music videos, by their conventions, cinematography, composition and semiotics. We had studied theory work on, target audience e.g. (Male gaze)

Narrative structures. (Linear, Non-linear, Circular narrative, purpose of visual storytelling (Low angle, Dutch) semiotics (What’s in the mise en scene and how that object or thing symbolises it’s purpose.)

On the 2nd October, James Fox had us listen to a song called. Buried With The Blues, by Moriaches Men. Us as a group decided to go along with this song and started to form ideas on how to pull it off as a music video.

 

Visual note:

From the start we listen to the song and started visualising what we felt fitted within the song. Having a country rock style to it, my group and I started doing a moodboard, where we would go on the web and put images (Bikers, Long Roads, ghost town.) that connect with our visions onto a document.

We worked on storyboards, to get an idea for when we shoot, a blueprint to how we want the scene to be filmed, shot by shot.

THE NARRATIVE

The narrative of the music video changed throughout the pre-production. Originally, we wanted the story to be told as a circular narrative; focus on a woman who witnesses her boyfriend cheating and decides to poison him in a café; Revealing her face at the end to discover she was the girl who planted the black rose on his tombstone. Using a black rose to symbolise death.

After re-analysing the lyrics, we interpreted it in the man’s point of view and how this woman has psychologically damaged him, by leaving him. Now that the woman has moved on, the protagonist must let go of her and move on himself.

We wanted to use flashbacks and quick time-lapse to show us the protagonists background relationship and to reveal how he has hit the situation he’s in.

Media Language:

Within the piece, I used a various of colour gradings; the present time set in the story, I used a strong contrast, with blue colour to give us a feel of this characters mood, his sorrow and despair, where as his memories are quite bright and colour graded green, for a positive look.

We spoke to Ross who was the lead guitarist to Moriaches men; he told us his vision to the song and also did the vocalists who write the song. The vocalist wanted the band performance to look black and white, with high contrast and to look a bit mystery. This is an edited image I did using from premier pro.

Location ideas

I had been to multiple locations, from restaurants, bars and Parks.  I introduced myself to managers in JD Whether-spoon, grants restaurant and Bar-red; discussing our idea with what we wanted to use their bar for.

We as a group really wanted to shoot a scene at the Dukes Head restaurant as we felt it was the right location for our piece, but unfortunately the manager couldn’t let us. I had to pass the message onto a receptionist, which she passed onto her manager.

For future reference, I will only arrive at a location with paperwork that will pitch our idea, so that I can truly sell myself with what we want and also only speak to the manager.

On the 17/11/2015, we shot our first scene in the park; I was using a Canon 1200d attached onto a glidecam. I had trouble on the day as the glidecam wasn’t set up probably and the screws to adjust the weight were missing.

Although I wasn’t aware of the screws missing at the time and I wasn’t sure how set the balance on the glidecam, although I did find out by researching tutorials after the shoot. So with some shots being unsteady, I used a tool on Premier Pro to steady the shots, this was a tool called warp stabilize.

Sam Calton shot the scene in the bar, Sam has more experience with the steady-cam harnessed, so we felt it only made sense that he captured this scene. In this scene we are seeing the leading character drowning his sorrows with a bottle of beer, from there he looks at a photo of his woman and we go into a flashback of the park scene.

 

The filming is now complete and is almost been pieced together.

The things I have learnt and will apply in my next music video is

  • Plenty of cut aways
  • Improve my communication.
  • How to use glide-cam (Movements, set up.)
  • Framing with the DSLR

Band performance 4/12/2015

Today Ross, lead guitarist came into the College studio to perform, We was feeling under-pressure because we we time limited,  but we was trying to remain calm and focused. We found that setting the Red Head lighting gear up was the most time consuming, as we was trying to get the result we was looking for. Luckily we finished the shoot and now Danni is in the editing suite, piecing the pieces together.

Music Video 27/11/2015-02/12/2015

From the 27/11 to the 02/12/2015, I have tried to spend as much time on Premier Pro as possible, to edit the two scene we have, which is one in the walks and the other in Bar Red.

I am finding it difficult to work with as we didn’t get enough footage for the two scenes. I am trying to scrap as much as I can from what I have to work with.

Using film burn transitions and working on the basics, (Lumetri and colour grading.) I am trying to make the best of what we’ve got.

Park Scene 17/11/2015

12270111_1018633764845599_444840190_nToday we went to the walks to shoot a scene for our music video, Arriving on location, I had major trouble operating the glide-cam and using a new camera. As for the usual cameras we use which are the Panasonic, I wanted to try something new, but realizing after the shoot, the shots weren’t probably framed because the dslr didn’t have a grid display, which is used to guide me whats in the frame and out. The shoot was quite rough in terms of framing and stabilization, but I know how I can work around and improve it in Premier Pro CC. When I arrived home, I did tutorial research on how to set the glide-cam up, unfortunately a screw is missing on the glide cam, preventing me to remove and adjust the weight scales.

Restaurant scene 9/12/2015

Today my group went off to shoot a scene at the Grants Restaurant for the music video. Unfortunately when they arrived on location, the supervisor had to cancel due to full confirmation from the manager and the shoot was suppose to be at 10 till 12, before customers would arrive. I will phone the manager at 6:00.

My knowledge with the Panasonic AVCCAM

This camera is a digital camcorder, with a built in 70-300mm lens. This blog is to show my understanding with this camera.

  • Power on: A switch at the back next to the red record button
  • LED slide: on the right back of the body, slide open the LED finder
  • View finder: On the back top of the body, looking through the viewfinder, it shows what the camera see.
  • Manual Iris: On the bottom next to the Iris wheel, press to switch to manual and use wheel to adjust light exposure
  • Shutter speed: Open LED screen and it will reveal configs, which one will say speed control, ideal to keep shutter speed to 1/60
  • White Balance: On the bottom next to the iris and gain, theres a switch which will need to be put to preset. After that you need a white a4 or anything that is completely white, have that in the frame and hold the button on the bottom of the front cam to manually correct the white balance.
  • Manual Focus: Theres a switch at the front next to the natural density filter, that says focus, switch to manual.
  •  Zebra: Opening the LED, theres a button that says Zebra. This shows you
